You can now set your quote posting privacy preferences on Mastodon. You can allow anyone / just your followers / nobody to quote you:

1. Log into your server's website
2. Click ⚙️ Preferences (if you're on a phone it's ☰ in bottom right and ⚙️ Preferences)
3. Click "Other" (if you're on a phone it's ☰ in top right and "Other")
4. On "Who Can Quote" menu select option you want
5. Click "Save Changes" button

The actual ability to quote post will be in the next Mastodon update.

Do you want to write posts longer than 500 characters?

There are many well-run reliable servers which have much higher post size limits, you can see a hand-picked list here:

➡️ fedi.garden/tag/larger-post-si

These longer posts will display fine to all your followers, even followers on servers with 500 character limits.

(If you want to move your account to another server, there's a step-by-step easy-to-understand guide to this at fedi.tips/transferring-your-ma )

What do you think is the best way to grow a follower base on Mastodon?

@FediTips what do you think and why?

You can view Mastodon in dark mode or light mode, and on some servers and apps there are many other colour schemes too.

If you're using your server's website, here is how you can set your Mastodon theme:

1. Click ⚙️ Preferences (if you’re on a phone click ☰ at bottom right and then ⚙️ Preferences)
2. In the "Site Theme" menu select the colour scheme you want
3. Click the "Save Changes" button

Are you seeing too much of certain topics on Mastodon?

You can customise what you see using Mastodon's "Filters" feature:

➡️ fedi.tips/filtering-your-timel

Filters let you automatically hide posts containing specific words, phrases, parts of words, hashtags, links or emoji.

Filtered posts can either be either hidden completely, or displayed behind a content warning so you can click them open if needed. You can also set up multiple filters if you want.

Do you want help with using Mastodon or the rest of the Fediverse? Or do you know anyone who wants help with using this place?

I'm really happy to help people directly, just get in touch however you want. You can reply to this post, or mention me in your own posts, or DM me, it's all good 🙂

Especially keen to help non-technical people, it is totally fine to ask even the simplest questions! 👍

There are lots of ways to share posts on Mastodon:

- If you want to share a post with your followers, click the boost button (🔁 or 🚀 )

- If you want to share a direct link to a post, click ⋯ on the post and then "Copy link"

- If you're using a mobile app, there may also be a "share" button that looks like a box with an arrow. Click this to bring up options for sharing on your phone's apps.

You can change the email address on your Mastodon account very easily:

1. Log into your Mastodon server's website
2. Click ⚙️ Preferences (or ☰ and ⚙️ Preferences on a phone)
3. Click Account (or ☰ and Account on a phone)
4. Type your new email into "email address" box, and enter your password in the "current password" box next to the email address (but NOT in the "new password" section)
5. Click "save changes"

This works on your current Masto account, you do NOT need a new account.

Fediverse groups are really useful accounts to follow. They are sort of "super hashtags" as their posts reach everyone who follows the group, no matter what server they are on. You can find out more at:

➡️ fedi.tips/how-to-use-groups-on

They aren't like groups on other platforms, it's better to think of them as hashtags that federate more effectively.

Follow a group to see its discussions in your timelines, mention a group to post to it. (It's like old-style email discussion lists.)

@FediTips
Boosting... Specifically, your own posts.

Boosting your own post right away doesn't do anything useful.

Boosting your own post a few days later brings it back into the timeline for anyone who missed it the first time around.

But how about boosting your own reply? If a reply is also relevant outside of the discussion, is there any advantage to boosting it? Would more people see it? I mean boosts are not a part of the thread, but does that make any difference?

Once upon a time I thought yes, but later came to the opposite conclusion. I'm guessing you know the definitive answer.

If you accidentally share sensitive info in a post, delete the post as soon as possible.

Do NOT just edit, because editing leaves the sensitive info visible in previous versions of the edited post. (Previous versions are visible on edited posts to prevent "bait and switch" abuse tactics from editing.)

If you want to keep most of the post intact when you delete it, select the "Delete & Re-Draft" option. This deletes the post but puts a copy of it into the post creation box.

Every server has a "Local" timeline which shows all the public posts made by members of that server. You can browse the Local timelines of most servers by going to their websites and clicking "🌎 Live Feeds". You don't need to be a member of that server or logged in.

You can also follow Local timelines of other servers on certain third party apps including Fedilab and Subway Tooter on Android, Ice Cubes on iPhone/iPad.
