#MIT Professor Cancels #Israeli Military Grant After Student Pressure

“This concession shows that student campaigns do have an influence,” one student said. "These ties cannot survive transparency."

"#ProPalestine student #activists across the country have struggled to get their universities to respond to pressure for divestment from Israel and its military–industrial complex.

"So when a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology withdrew from a grant from the Israeli military after hearing feedback from students protesting the ongoing genocide in Gaza, it was especially welcome news.

" 'This is one of the only cases where we know that student activism and public pressure led directly to an Israeli tie being cut, let alone a collaboration with its genocidal military,' said Mila Halgren, a postdoctoral associate at MIT. (The university did not respond to a request for comment.)

"MIT has come under internal and public scrutiny for conducting research on #warfare technology sponsored by #Israel. In July, the United Nations condemned the school for conducting 'weapons and #surveillance research funded by the Israeli ministry of defense — the only foreign military financing research at the institute.'

"That research included projects on drone swarm control — technology which the Israeli military has used during its siege on #Gaza — pursuit algorithms, and #UnderwaterSurveillance.

"Markus Buehler, a professor in the civil engineering department, withdrew the grant earlier this summer shortly after a student pro-Palestine group publicized it on Instagram.

" 'This concession shows that student campaigns do have an influence,' Halgren said. 'It also shows that these ties cannot survive #transparency and #PublicAwareness. Student action is not meaningless; despite increased repression, it is more important than ever to resist #genocide.”

¡Viva Palestina libre!

✨ Update from Gaza Soup Kitchen ✨

September 4th, 2025 by Hani Almadhoun, Organizer

"Hi friends,

If you are new here, welcome! My name is Hani, co-founder of the Gaza Soup Kitchen. For those regulars, thank you ✊

Right now we have 7 kitchens running in and around Gaza City , 5 water trucks delivering fresh water every morning , and our health clinic is still seeing patients .

Sadly, our classroom was bombed —but we’ve pivoted to something bigger:

✅ Delivered 4,250 food parcels so far

Another 2,550 parcels ready to go

In the middle area, we delivered 600 parcels and opened a new kitchen

We keep showing up for hospitals with meals

Each food parcel = 40–60 meals. It’s not just about helping one family—it feeds whole networks of relatives, neighbors, and displaced people.

In doing this, we’re also showing the world (and the bad actors watching us) that you can give away a lot of food in Gaza without harming Palestinians. Our signage makes that crystal clear.

One moving moment: we’ve been operating from inside an Orthodox and Catholic church (اتحاد الكنائس ) . Families shelter there, and they benefit from the food too. Our young team—many who had never met a Christian before—are learning about unity and friendship in real time. Feeding people from a church feels like something Jesus himself would have blessed.

We hear the drones above us, and we know they don’t like what we’re doing. But we’ll keep feeding as long as we’re allowed.

Our system works: families sign up on a link , we close it when full, assemble the food, and text pickup times. No chaos, no exploitation—just neighbors helping neighbors. Each distribution serves 500–1,000 people with dignity.

You give us confidence , even as we worry for our team’s safety every single day. I am tired of asking for prayers… but somehow it’s still comforting to do so.

Thank you for being with us. Together, we are saving lives, it's not a slogan it's our daily reality.

—Hani & the Gaza Soup Kitchen Team"

> A classified Israeli army database indicates that the vast majority of the 6,000 Palestinians who have been arrested in Gaza and held in appalling conditions in Israeli detention are civilians

> Both rights groups and Israeli soldiers have described an even smaller ratio of fighters among those rounded up in Gaza than what emerges from the leaked data.

#Australia will recognize a #PalestinianState, Prime Minister Albanese says

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — "Australia will recognize a Palestinian state, Prime Minister #AnthonyAlbanese said Monday, joining the leaders of #France, #Britain and #Canada in signaling they would do so.

"His remarks followed weeks of urging from within his Cabinet and from many in Australia to recognize a Palestinian state and amid growing criticism from officials in his government over suffering in #Gaza, which Albanese on Monday referred to as a 'humanitarian catastrophe.'

"Australia’s government has also criticized plans announced in recent days by Israeli leader #BenjaminNetanyahu for a sweeping new military offensive in Gaza."

AP News · Australia will recognize a Palestinian state, Prime Minister Albanese saysPrime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced that Australia will recognize a Palestinian state. This move aligns with recent signals from leaders in France, Britain and Canada. Albanese's decision follows internal pressure and criticism over the humanitarian situation in Gaza, which he described as a "catastrophe." The recognition will be formalized at the United Nations General Assembly in September. Conditions include no role for Hamas in a Palestinian government and the demilitarization of Gaza. Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu criticized the decision, while Australian Jewish and Palestinian groups expressed differing views on its impact.

Stop all #UK support for the #Israeli military in #Gaza

Enough is enough, immediately stop all UK support for the Israeli military in Gaza.

That means:

No more weapons sales
No more surveillance flights
No more training

There must be a complete halt in support while this horror unfolds.

Tens of thousands turn out for #Sydney pro-#Palestinian march

by Katy Watson and Tabby Wilson, August 3, 2025

"A planned pro-Palestinian protest across the #SydneyHarbour Bridge has gone ahead after it was authorised by the Supreme Court just one day prior, in what organisers called a 'historic' decision.

"Tens of thousands turned out for the #MarchForHumanity on Sunday despite torrential rain - with many carrying placards with messages to politicians to stop the war.

"WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was spotted among the protesters, with other notable attendees including federal MP Ed Husic and former NSW Premier Bob Carr.

" 'Shame shame Israel, shame shame USA,' the crowds chanted. 'What do we want? Ceasefire. When do we want it? Now.'

"Lots of families, many with small babies, came out to support the peaceful demonstration. Alongside them, stationed across the bridge, were police officers from the #RiotSquad.

" 'I know it's the other side of the world but it affects us here massively as well,' says dad Alec Beville, who compares the children in Gaza to his three-year-old son Frankie. 'We could be helping a lot more with aid.'

" 'Our government hasn't put any decent #sanctions on #Israel,' says Zara Williams as she carries her baby, Avery, in a sling. 'We [Australia] just can't do nothing while there's a forced starvation of an entire population.'

"Two hours into the march, attendees received a text from #NSWPolice that read: 'In consultation with the organisers, the march needs to stop due to public safety and await further instructions.'

"It asked everyone on the bridge to stop walking north and turn back toward the city in a 'controlled' way.

"Police have estimated that 90,000 people attended Sunday's march.

"Transport for NSW told motorists to avoid the city, warning of major delays and disruptions across Sydney's road and public transport network due to the protest.

"Sydney-based activist organisation #PalestineAction Group lodged a notice of intention for the march across the Sydney Harbour Bridge last Sunday, in response to what it called the 'atrocity' in #Gaza.

"Police rejected the application on the grounds that there was not enough time to prepare a traffic management plan, and warned of a potential crowd crush and other safety concerns.

"In a statement the following day, NSW Premier Chris Minns said they could not allow Sydney to 'descend into chaos' and would not be able to support a protest of 'this scale and nature' taking place on the bridge.

"The police also made an application to the NSW Supreme Court for a prohibition order for the event, which was declined just 24 hours before the protest was due to go ahead.

"According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Justice Belinda Rigg said safety concerns regarding the march were 'well founded', but march organiser Josh Lees from the #PalestineActionGroup had 'compellingly' explained the reasons why he believed there needed to be an urgent response to the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

"She said there was no evidence that a prohibition order would enhance public safety, and ordered the Sydney Harbour Bridge to be closed to vehicles, in addition to roads surrounding the proposed route.

"The final-hour authorisation gives attendees protection under the Summary Offences Act, meaning they will not be charged for offences specifically relating to public assembly, such as blocking traffic.

"In a statement published to Instagram, the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies said that it was 'disappointed' by the Supreme Court's decision to authorise the protest on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. [Yeah, well, I'm disappointed that some Jewish folks support #Genocide!]

"#Australia has been under mounting pressure to recognise #PalestinianStatehood, after #France, #Canada and the #UK all separately indicated that they would do so with conditions at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in September.

"Speaking on ABC's 7.30 programme, Prime Minister #AnthonyAlbanese said he wants to see conditions met that achieve lasting security for Israel before Australia commits to recognition of a Palestinian state.

"He added that he would not be pushed into the decision by other nations." [Well, maybe you'll be pushed into the decision by your own CITIZENS!]
