This is important research but its conceptual blinkers are troubling.

The researchers say the therapy would not be suitable for people who ‘struggle to tell the difference between emotions and physical sensations’.

Trouble is, our emotions ARE physical sensations! This is true for all of us. Learning to interpret these & name them as particular emotions is something we do as part of our acculturation to the circumstances we grow up in. Those of us who do this correctly, in the terms set by our culture, are normal. Those who don’t, are seen as disordered. Folks who live comfortably within the range of normal find it hard to imagine that the perceptions of people who live outside that territory may be valid & interesting. Hence big blinkers in research.

Neurodivergent folk experience our physical and other perceptions differently from most people. Many of us perceive things others do not. Learning to interpret our bodily sensations & describe them in terms that make sense in our culture is, for most of us, very difficult.

Psychedelics are a powerful tool, for us as well as for other people. However the experience for us is different. For example, all drugs affect me very strongly & a tiny dose of any psychoactive substance - including things not recognised as such like matcha or cacao - will re-tune my perceptions for hours. The only way for me to learn about by body’s responses to a whole array of socially normal activities was by experience.

As with all things relating to us, research into medication for neurodivergent folks needs to be guided by how we understand our own experiences.

More please.

IgNobel worthy research. 🙂

"In addition to always pooping midair, shearwaters release their droppings at regular intervals, every 4 to 10 minutes, according to the researchers. And even when the birds are in the water, they’ll take the extra step and fly into the air if they need to “drop feces,” Uesaka, the study’s lead author, explained to Gizmodo."

On Traverse City’s northern edge, the Northwest #Michigan #Horticulture #Research Center is a 137-acre test #farm. Run by #MSU & funded by #USDA #grants & grower money, it’s where Dr. Nikki Rothwell has spent more than two decades helping orchards survive.

#Farmers lean on her, especially now.

On a sticky summer morning, she walked the rows with interns & researchers, testing hardier trees & better fruit.

A #USDA #grant request for #funding a cold-storage unit remained in limbo, as #Trump cut spending on #farm programs & #agricultural #research. And Jack King, Juliette’s brother & the farm’s agronomist, kept searching for #fertilizer cheap enough to haul & untouched by Trump’s #trade wars.

“It all slows us down,” King McAvoy, the farm’s business manager, said during a brief pause in July’s harried harvest.
