Brazil police accuse Bolsonaro of planning to flee to Argentina to seek asylum | Jair Bolsonaro | The Guardian

"Brazilian police have told a court they have found a document on the mobile phone of former president Jair Bolsonaro suggesting he had planned to flee to Argentina ahead of his judgment for allegedly plotting a military coup."

IMPORTANT!!

"#Bolsonaro was not #arrested because he attempted a #coup d'état after losing the 2022 election. This process is still in progress. Bolsonaro should only be arrested for this after being convicted.

He was arrested now in another investigation, initiated because Jair committed, with his accomplices Eduardo and Donald, the clearest and most evident attempt to obstruct justice in modern history: the largest superpower in the world took the Brazilian economy hostage until the Brazilian Judiciary accepted to hand over to the United States the right to say which laws are valid or not valid in our territory."

#Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva harshly criticized U.S. President Donald Trump following the implementation of a 50% #tariff on #Brazilian exports. #Lula called #Trump “authoritarian” with “anti-civilizational” behavior and accused him of creating “problems where there were none.”

“A president must not humiliate himself before another president. I respect everyone and demand respect in return,” Lula told Reuters, rejecting the idea of a phone call with Trump. “He doesn’t want to talk, and I have no intention of doing so.”

The move was a shift from long-standing #US practice—even under #MarcoRubio himself. The Secy of #State has personally congratulated leaders in Trinidad, Tobago & Ecuador for conducting “free & fair” #elections since Jan.

#Brazil is not about to announce reciprocal #tariffs, #Lula said. Nor will his govt give up on cabinet-level talks. But Lula himself is in no rush to ring the White House.
"The day my intuition says #Trump is ready to talk, I won't hesitate to call him," Lula said in an interview from his presidential residence in Brasilia. "But today my intuition says he doesn't want to talk. And I'm not going to humiliate myself."

Prosecutors accuse #Bolsonaro of heading a #criminal organization that plotted to overturn the #election, including plans to #kill President Luiz Inácio #Lula da Silva & a Supreme Court justice. Monday’s order followed one from the top court last month that ordered Bolsonaro wear an electronic ankle monitor & imposed a curfew on his activities while the proceedings are underway.

A Brazilian Supreme Court judge has raised alarm over what he labelled a coordinated foreign-backed effort to destabilize the country's democratic institutions, just as former President Jair Bolsonaro faces trial for allegedly orchestrating a failed coup attempt.

Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who is presiding over the case, linked recent US sanctions and punitive tariffs to a broader campaign aimed at shielding Bolsonaro and derailing Brazil's pursuit of accountability.

Federal investigations uncovered a sweeping conspiracy involving Bolsonaro and high-ranking allies, including evidence of coup planning, targeted assassination plots, and illegal use of Brazil's intelligence agency to surveil political opponents.

Operation Counter-Coup, launched by Brazilian authorities in 2024, exposed how Bolsonaro's circle sought to nullify the 2022 election outcome by declaring a state of emergency and mobilizing the military. A document outlining such plans was found at the residence of Bolsonaro's former justice minister.

"“Let this be a warning to those who would trample on the fundamental rights of their countrymen,” Marco Rubio, the US secretary of state, posted on X, a social-media service, on July 30th. The would-be human-rights trampler was Alexandre de Moraes, a Brazilian Supreme Court judge. The warning came in the form of sanctions placed on Mr Moraes under the Global Magnitsky Act, freezing his assets in American banks and prohibiting him from entering the United States.

The Magnitsky Act punishes foreign officials for “gross violations of internationally recognised human rights”. It has previously been used against genocidal Burmese generals and Russian officials who murdered political dissidents. Mr Moraes has done nothing like that. His most noteworthy act is leading the prosecution of Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil’s far-right former president and ally of Donald Trump, who will soon stand trial on charges of plotting a coup to overturn an election he lost in 2022, which he denies.

Targeting a sitting judge in a functioning democracy is unprecedented. The sanctions come days after the State Department revoked the visas of most justices on Brazil’s Supreme Court and other officials connected to Mr Bolsonaro’s prosecution. In justifying the sanctions Scott Bessent, the treasury secretary, claimed that Mr Moraes was carrying out “an unlawful witch-hunt against US and Brazilian citizens and companies”."
