People use the bible to justify lots of cruelty, pogroms, "holy wars," burning of "witches," and so on.

People who behave that way, their descendants down the road rarely admit that their ancestors abused the bible to do harm to others.

The descendants down the road cannot admit this because they are using the bible in the very same way today, with the new groups they've targeted, like trans people.
