Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>Beyond Fairness in Computer Vision: A Holistic Approach to<br>Mitigating Harms and Fostering Community-Rooted Computer<br>Vision Research</p><p>Timnit Gebru and Remi Denton</p><p>"ABSTRACT: The field of computer vision is now a multi-billion dollar enterprise, with its use in surveillance applications driving<br>this large market share. In the last six years, computer vision researchers have started to discuss the risks and harms of some of these systems, mostly using the lens of fairness introduced in the machine learning literature to perform this analysis. While this lens is useful to uncover and mitigate a narrow segment of the harms that can be enacted through computer vision systems, it is only one of the toolkits that researchers have available to uncover and mitigate the harms of the systems they build.</p><p>In this monograph, we discuss a wide range of risks and harms that can be enacted through the development and deployment of computer vision systems. We also discuss some existing technical approaches to mitigating these harms, as well as the shortcomings of these mitigation strategies.</p><p>Then, we introduce computer vision researchers to harm mitigation strategies proposed by journalists, human rights activists, individuals harmed by computer vision systems, and researchers in disciplines ranging from sociology to physics. We conclude the monograph by listing principles that researchers can follow to build what we call community rooted computer vision tools in the public interest, and give examples of such research directions. We hope that this monograph can serve as a starting point for researchers exploring the harms of current computer vision systems and attempting to steer the field into community-rooted work."</p><p><a href="https://cdn.sanity.io/files/wc2kmxvk/revamp/79776912203edccc44f84d26abed846b9b23cb06.pdf" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">cdn.sanity.io/files/wc2kmxvk/r</span><span class="invisible">evamp/79776912203edccc44f84d26abed846b9b23cb06.pdf</span></a></p><p><a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/ComputerVision" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ComputerVision</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/STS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>STS</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Surveillance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Surveillance</span></a></p>

Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>"To understand AI algorithms, Vallor argues we should not regard them as minds. “We’ve been trained over a century by science fiction and cultural visions of AI to expect that when it arrives, it’s going to be a machine mind,” she tells me. “But what we have is something quite different in nature, structure, and function.”</p><p>Rather, we should imagine AI as a mirror, which doesn’t duplicate the thing it reflects. “When you go into the bathroom to brush your teeth, you know there isn’t a second face looking back at you,” Vallor says. “That’s just a reflection of a face, and it has very different properties. It doesn’t have warmth; it doesn’t have depth.” Similarly, a reflection of a mind is not a mind. AI chatbots and image generators based on large language models are mere mirrors of human performance. “With ChatGPT, the output you see is a reflection of human intelligence, our creative preferences, our coding expertise, our voices—whatever we put in.”</p><p>Even experts, Vallor says, get fooled inside this hall of mirrors. Geoffrey Hinton, the computer scientist who shared this year’s Nobel Prize in physics for his pioneering work in developing the deep-learning techniques that made LLMs possible, at an AI conference in 2024 that “we understand language in much the same way as these large language models.”"</p><p><a href="https://nautil.us/ai-is-the-black-mirror-1169121/?utm_source=pocket_shared" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">nautil.us/ai-is-the-black-mirr</span><span class="invisible">or-1169121/?utm_source=pocket_shared</span></a></p><p><a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/AI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AI</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/AGI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AGI</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/AIHype" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AIHype</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Philosophy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Philosophy</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/LLMs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LLMs</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/ChatGPT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ChatGPT</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/STS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>STS</span></a></p>
Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>"Anyone teaching about AI has some excellent material to work with in this book. There are chewy examples for a classroom discussion such as ‘Why did the Fragile Families Challenge End in Disappointment?’; and multiple sections in the chapter ‘the long road to generative AI’. In addition the Substack newsletter that this book was written through offers a section called ‘Book Exercises’. Interestingly, some parts of this book were developed by Narayanan developing classes in partnership Princeton quantitative sociologist, Matt Salganik. As Narayanan writes, nothing makes you learn and understand something as much as teaching it to others does. I hope they write about collaborating across disciplinary lines, which remains a challenge for many of us working on AI."</p><p><a href="https://www.lcfi.ac.uk/news-events/blog/post/aisnakeoil" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">lcfi.ac.uk/news-events/blog/po</span><span class="invisible">st/aisnakeoil</span></a></p><p><a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/AI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AI</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/PredictiveAI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PredictiveAI</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/GenerativeAI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GenerativeAI</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/STS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>STS</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/SnakeOil" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SnakeOil</span></a></p>

Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>"This paper outlines a theory of amnesia in the face of innovation: when apparent technological innovations occasion the disregard of preexisting cultural, legal, and infrastructural norms. Innovation amnesia depends on cultural patterns that appear to be increasingly widespread: the valorization of technological innovation and the sensation of limited political space for reforming social arrangements. The resulting amnesia is by default an extension of existing structural inequalities. If innovations arise through deploying concentrated private wealth, the amnesia will likely target institutions that facilitate collective power among less powerful people. Up and down social hierarchies, however, achieving amnesia through innovation can bear irresistible allure. When other paths for structural change become mired in inertia or gridlock, amnesia may appear to be the only available pathway to reform. The purpose of a theory of amnesia is to assist affected communities in noticing it when it occurs and wielding it to their advantage, particularly through mobilizing self-governance around moments of innovation."</p><p><a href="https://firstmonday.org/ojs/index.php/fm/article/view/13668" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">firstmonday.org/ojs/index.php/</span><span class="invisible">fm/article/view/13668</span></a></p><p><a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Innovation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Innovation</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/DiffusionOfInnovation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DiffusionOfInnovation</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Technology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Technology</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/PublicPolicy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PublicPolicy</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/STS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>STS</span></a></p>
